I was privileged enough to be able to volunteer for this wonderful project!

The recipient is "Boys Hope Girls Hope Baltimore" and the builder is Excel Homes

To be part of this was a wonderful and rewarding experience!  The entire community was in full-on "giving" mode and it was amazing to be a part of it!  Watching a community of people come together, every day people coming to the site with donations of water, supplies, massage therapy, their skills and their time...it was priceless!  There wasn't a moment that went by that someone didn't drive up to the entrance with an offer to help in some way, large or small...as I was leaving my shift a truck filled with five brick layers drove up to volunteer their skill to get the home completed on time (severe time set backs due to the stormy weather put them way behind schedule).  It was an outpouring of love and support that I had never experienced before!

Some of us were lucky enough to be part of the filming and get to meet the cast of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and the children of the cast of "Modern Family" (Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Ariel Winter).  It was interesting to see what goes on "in front of the camera" and to meet many of the people "behind the camera" that make the show come together.

If you find out this show is coming to your area...volunteer.  Not only will you end up with the "coveted blue shirt", you will know you helped your community, be part of something much larger than yourself and feel the love that goes into helping others!

You can find more information about the project by following Excel Homes Blog and signing up to be alerted when the epidsode airs!

Who knows...you might even see me on TV :)

HOLLYWOOD COULDN'T WRITE A SCRIPT THIS GOOD

6:00 AM MONDAY 2.8.2010  KAHUNA UPDATE # 1: Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, another major winter storm is in the Mid-Atlantic pipeline. Ready for Snowpocalypse 2.0? With Winter Storm Watches and Warnings now stretching 2,230 miles from New Jersey westward to Utah. The Forecast Team expects snowfall by 7 PM Wednesday to reach or exceed 12 inches along the I-95 corridor from Baltimore north to Philadelphia as well as southeastern PA. We expect many locally higher amounts near 20". NOAA's HPC Snow & Ice Team has already throw the B-word into the mix. The Philadelphia metro NWS office is using the phrase "explosively developing." Just so you know.

Visit the new KahunaCast Zone for details on storm timing and impacts, with lead collaborators Ryan K. and Winterman. See the Winter Stormcast Zone snowfall projections ideas and experimental data. Our storm grade amounts: Monday 3 PM.

WINTER STORM WATCH/WARNINGS

LIQUID EQUIVALENTS GFS 72-hour | NAM 72-hour | SREF 72-hour

If you live in the Mid-Atlantic between PA Interstate 80 and US Route 40, in preparation for Tuesday night, do whatever you can to clear your lot or parking area or just help your neighbors do the same. Current computer model trends will likely surprise you at the minimum and terrify you at the maximum.

IN THE COMMENTS, WE WELCOME YOUR RESPONSE TO...
(1) Any safety tips and procedures you have created or find useful in situations like this, regarding snow removal, home management, power outages, etc.
(2) If you are annoyed about where to put it all NOW, explain where school systems will  put another 6-12 inches+ by Wednesday afternoon.
(3) A painful lesson for school districts which do not study or appreciate the risks of what happens when a strong El Nino pattern is combined with high snowcover.

I highly recommend this blog for the Mid-Atlantic region weather...he has been spot-on!

Mon, 01 Feb 2010 11:54:00 -0800 In virtual life comes a real death...R.I.P. Will Hall http://media.tammicopsey.com/in-virtual-life-comes-a-real-deathrip-will-ha http://media.tammicopsey.com/in-virtual-life-comes-a-real-deathrip-will-ha

A good friend of mine died on Friday...

Will Hall

(aka Eddie Decay/IggyPopWillEatItself/Axl D’Priest)

1972-2010

Will Hall

Will was a music lover and was passionate in sharing his love of music with everyone he touched.  He enjoyed discussing his vast music collection (mostly vinyl LPs) and wrote some of the best album reviews I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.  He made you feel like you were sitting in the room listening right along with him.  He enjoyed discussing the smallest nuances of a song and the emotions it invoked in him.  He made you stop and think about the music in a different way.  Even if you didn’t walk away liking the particular album being discussed, you would walk away from his review with an appreciation for something about it and an appreciation for Will.

His musical knowledge was so vast, wide and open minded, that most of us will never meet anyone who can match it.  He devoured musical knowledge and he shared that knowledge with everyone.  He knew more about music than I’ll ever forget.

Will’s passion for music was absolutely infectious.  He had the ability to make you want to hear a band you’d previously written off and look at them in a completely different light.  He made you want to love whatever he was listening to, if for no other reason than to get into a discussion with him about it.

Will turned me on to a lot of great music that I probably would never have listened to, as well as giving me a new perspective on some older music I’d long forgotten about.  It’s just who he was and what he enjoyed.

In truth, he would have been a great asset to any record company or magazine that would have employed him.  I don't think he was ever paid for any of his work and it seems he didn’t want to be.  I would have paid to read anything he had written about music and so would many, many others.  He always seemed so happy to be able to share his love of music with those he touched, to share his knowledge, share his passion and interact with fellow music lovers.

After interacting with Will as IggyPopWillEatItSelf since 1998, I finally have a face and a real name to put to his face…Will Hall…and sadly it is upon his death.

It seems strange to know that I will never have another instant message with him, never see another post from him and never see his big blue font again.  Even though I didn’t know Will in real life, I will miss him just as much as if I had.  Will ingrained his personality and passion in me through his words.  In a way, I knew much more about him through his writing than many people I know in real life.

That is what makes this so hard…explaining how someone I interacted with on a message board became part of my life.  Explaining how words on a screen felt like they were being written by a good friend…a kindred spirit.  Its hard explaining how the death of someone you only knew in the virtual world of the internet can affect you.  It is probably the most difficult thing I've ever tried to explain.

These words (written by someone on that message board) have gotten me through a very tough and confusing time:

“If you are wrestling with embarrassment about feeling palpable grief over the loss of an internet acquaintance, let it go. No, you might never have met him "in real life." But you met him here - this bizarre land where we kid ourselves that we're veiled behind alternyms but proceed to let the real secrets, passions, yearnings and bitterness of our souls flow out through our keyboards. He might have known the "real" you better than many of your friends and co-workers.

So go ahead and cry with a clear conscience, and when someone asks you what's wrong, you just tell them "a good friend of mine died today."

Fri, 29 Jan 2010 05:59:37 -0800 First-Time Homebuyer Credit http://media.tammicopsey.com/first-time-homebuyer-credit-6 http://media.tammicopsey.com/first-time-homebuyer-credit-6

First-Time Homebuyer Credit

Legislative changes in November 2009 expanded and extended the credit and also added documentation requirements for claiming the credit. Due to increased compliance checks by the IRS, failure to submit documentation will slow down the issuance of any applicable refund.

Filing Requirements

2009 Tax Return

Because of the documentation requirements for claiming the credit, taxpayers who claim the credit on their 2009 tax return must file a paper — not electronic — return and attach Form 5405, First-Time Homebuyer Credit and Repayment of the Credit (see the instructions for help with the form), with one of the following:

  • For purchasers of conventional homes, a copy of Form HUD-1, Settlement Statement, or other settlement statement, showing all parties' names and signatures, property address, sales price and date of purchase.
  • For purchasers of mobile homes who are unable to get a settlement statement, a copy of the executed retail sales contract showing all parties' names and signatures, property address, purchase price and date of purchase.
  • For a newly constructed home where a settlement statement is not available, a copy of the certificate of occupancy showing the owner’s name, property address and date of the certificate.

The new legislation extends the credit to long-time residents of the same main home if they purchase a new main home. To qualify, eligible taxpayers must show that they lived in their old homes for a five-consecutive-year period during the eight-year period ending on the purchase date of the new home. For long-time residents claiming the credit, the IRS recommends attaching, in addition to the documents described above, any of the following documentation of the five-consecutive-year period:

  • Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement, or substitute mortgage interest statements,
  • Property tax records or
  • Homeowner’s insurance records.

2008 Tax Return

It is still possible to claim the homebuyer credit for 2009 home purchases on 2008 tax returns. Homebuyers may use the December 2009 revision of the Form 5405  along with Form 1040X to amend their 2008 tax return.

Homebuyer Credit Expanded and Extended

The Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, signed into law on Nov. 6, 2009, extends and expands the first-time homebuyer credit allowed by previous Acts.

Under the new law, an eligible taxpayer must buy, or enter into a binding contract to buy, a principal residence on or before April 30, 2010 and close on the home by June 30, 2010. For qualifying purchases in 2010, taxpayers have the option of claiming the credit on either their 2009 or 2010 return.

The new law also:

  • Authorizes the credit for long-time homeowners buying a new principal residence.
  • Raises the income limitations for homeowners claiming the credit.

News release 2009-108 has the details, as do two new IRS videos in English and Spanish.

Members of the military, Foreign Service and intelligence community serving outside the U.S. should also be aware of new benefits in the law that apply particularly to them.

Following is general information for first-time homebuyers who settled on a new home on or before Nov. 6, 2009.

For 2008 Home Purchases

The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 established a tax credit for first-time homebuyers that can be worth up to $7,500. For homes purchased in 2008, the credit is similar to a no-interest loan and must be repaid in 15 equal, annual installments beginning with the 2010 income tax year.

For 2009 Home Purchases

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 expanded the first-time homebuyer credit by increasing the credit amount to $8,000 for purchases made in 2009 before Dec. 1. However, the new Worker, Homeownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009 has extended the deadline. Now, taxpayers who have a binding contract to purchase a home before May 1, 2010, are eligible for the credit. Buyers must close on the home before July 1, 2010. [Added Nov. 12, 2009]

For home purchased in 2009, the credit does not have to be paid back unless the home ceases to be the taxpayer's main residence within a three-year period following the purchase.

First-time homebuyers who purchase a home in 2009 can claim the credit on either a 2008 tax return, due April 15, 2009, or a 2009 tax return, due April 15, 2010. The credit may not be claimed before the closing date. News release 2009-27 has more information on these options.

General Information

Homebuyers who purchased a home in 2008, 2009 or 2010 may be able to take advantage of the first-time homebuyer credit. The credit:

  • Applies only to homes used as a taxpayer's principal residence.
  • Reduces a taxpayer's tax bill or increases his or her refund, dollar for dollar.
  • Is fully refundable, meaning the credit will be paid out to eligible taxpayers, even if they owe no tax or the credit is more than the tax owed.
